Yesterday we attended the kick-off event “Staying on Course – with NDR and vhs in the North” at the NDR regional broadcasting center in Hanover. It was an engaging evening that highlighted just how vital media literacy is for our society and democratic participation today.
The focus was on questions that affect us all in our daily lives: How do we recognize disinformation? How do we handle AI-generated content? And what influence do social media and algorithms have on the information that reaches us? In addition to interesting insights, the event provided a great opportunity for discussion and for critically reflecting on our own media consumption.
It became clear once again: Adult education centers (vhs) can play a key role in these areas. As hubs for learning and community, they provide the ideal setting to address media literacy and democratic education locally and to bring people together for conversation. The event series can therefore not only encourage personal participation but also provide inspiration for new offerings at your own institutions—ranging from individual themed evenings and workshops to long-term educational programs.
Conclusion: It is worth taking a closer look at these topics, asking questions, and engaging in dialogue with one another. The upcoming events offer further inspiration and the chance to gather ideas for your own educational work.
